A few things to have ready

  • Clean glass jars
  • Warm soapy water
  • Optional glass-compatible paint
  • Flowers or dried stems

Start with jars that are worth keeping

Choose jars with no cracks, chips or sharp rims. Soak removable paper labels in warm soapy water and clean the glass thoroughly. Let it dry before decorating. Different heights create an easy arrangement, but three similar jars can look equally lovely lined up on a shelf.

Keep the finish simple

Clear glass is already beautiful. If you want color, use a product designed for glass and follow its preparation and curing instructions. Paint the outside only and keep the rim clear. Once a jar has been decorated with craft products, reserve it for decoration rather than food storage.

Arrange fewer stems than you think

Start with one branching stem and add a small bloom or two. Trim stems to suit the height of the jar. For fresh flowers, change the water regularly and keep the arrangement on a water-resistant surface. Check plant suitability before displaying flowers where pets or children can reach them.

Style, reuse and rearrange

Group jars on a tray, leave space between them, or place one by your bedside. Dried stems make an easy alternative when you do not want to maintain fresh flowers. Keep all arrangements away from open flames. Ordinary food jars are not automatically suitable candle vessels, so use battery lights if you want a soft glow.
